Today’s Gospel seems to be difficult. It’s one of those moments when it looks to me like God is dividing people into good and bad: „A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil.” And yet each of us is a sinner, and each of us is redeemed by the blood of Jesus. So how can you divide into good and bad? While I was thinking about who might be considered a „good tree” bringing „good fruit”, suddenly I realized something. After all, this is not a sociological description and classification of the population, it is Scripture! And the Bible always has two messages for us – it tells us something about God and tells us something about ourselves. From this perspective, everything took on a different meaning.
Jesus tells us that „A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.” This says something about God – since He is pure good and Satan is pure evil, we should not be deceived by the hints suggesting that God’s plans might have any kind of bad consequences, or worse, that the devil’s intentions may result in any good. It is sure that if we consciously choose evil, even in very small matters, because it is easier and brings pleasure, sooner or later we will get bad fruit.
This Gospel also tells us something about ourselves. If our life brings good fruit, it means that our heart is a good tree, rooted in Love. However, if for some reason the fruits of our actions are bad, we shouldn’t look for excuses in bad sunlight, air pollution and worms eating us up. Something is wrong with our roots. They did not spoiled by themselves – maybe in the past they suffered from lightning and they can not be reborn, maybe there is too much fear in them to freely grow, or maybe they don’t want to take the effort of digging to the source of Living Water.
Today I have the honor to be in Marki and film the music festival of young talents Marki.Fm. The condition for participation in the Festival was having lyrics that promote positive values and focus on the good. It is an opportunity for young people to develop their talents and spread their roots in the right direction!
Let’s review our fruits today. If they are good – let’s thank God for nutritious juices, which God gives us every day and let’s be happy for the healthy roots that can give life. If the fruit is bad, then let’s look at our roots – what do we feed them, do we give them space. Above all, however, let us call upon the best tree doctor, a specialist in the treatment of any disease – Jesus himself.
